The Artwork of Nicholas Dwyer

“primitive, hi-tech” from Nick Dwyer on Vimeo.

A video I made about my "Art & Tech" class projects (at the art school, at OU). Thanks to Brent and Pete for teaching me.

I think that this is a good start and hope it makes you want to try Arduino too.

Primitive, hi-tech is a statement about our mindset on technology and how it has changed over the ages of our existence. In so many ways we are still like our caveman past selves. Look at the kind of technology we possess…look what we use it for….

Leviathan

These are the first ceramic artworks I’ve shared here. I am enjoying another outlet and medium, and ceramic clay is one of my favorites now.

Anasazi is a small coffee-type cup, and features a high fire glaze called “Zombie”. This batch was watered down, hence the more yellow than green and orange hues. The cup has three fingers or outshoots, echoed by three circular marks, hug your fingers and give while it is a smaller cup, it has presence on the table. I have long been interested in the Anasazi, and this cup sends me to some lost desert, reminds of artifacts and alien space crafts. I was once told that my ceramic art looks like it could have been dug up from the ground, and yet it has is its own style that is neither truly past or present.

Leviathan. It has evoked an idea of a ship or sails and also, shoes in me and people around me during its build. Shoe-boat just doesn’t have the same ring to it. The flowing lattice arches seems to follow the waves, and the connections and color transitions keep the eye moving.

I feel like each of my early ceramic arts could expand into additional work of a set or theme in the future.

SPIRE

spire1

Spire was my first class project focused on manipulation of steel. I fabricated this sculpture in the metal shop- metal saws, vice, mig welder, bolt cutters and a big ol hammer. Steel is definitely a cool medium, I will partake in the future. I’ve got some cool teachers here. NJD

Gauntlet

wind4After a break from posting I’m back. I have been creating artwork during my word press black out and have a lot to update. Thanks for coming back!

More to come on this concept art. In the theatre of conflict, even an out matched and overran foe can even the odds through cunning and raw firepower.

Squid

Sorry its been a while…newborn baby and back in school. Time is my enemy!

This is a sketch from a year ago that I photoshoped tonight. It was for an artificial texture assignment concept, but wasnt used in the end.

Mechanical animals anyone? Growing up in the 80′s, I fell in love with Battle Beasts…best toys ever! Animal humanoids with body armor, weapons, vehicles and best of all…Holograms!!!

Oh, Nostalgia.

“Copter” VTOL Drone

Image

This is a glimpse of the near future. Everything will be automated.

The assault will be lead with drones with a few stealths overseeing the attack.

Maybe your local police will fly these, or a private security contractor.

I added a thrust vectoring nozzle to replace the tail rotor and imply advanced

helicopter aerobatics.Perhaps it has a mind of its own, we’ll just have to see.

F-35 XL (Twin Engine F-35)

This kind of reminds me of the YF-23 and the J-20.

I wanted to make a Navy safe version/ heavier fighter bomber

aircraft. This could come in a stretched two seater as well I suppose.

The wing is a delta configuration.

No forward canards…US doesn’t believe in them.

FYI I made the name F-35 XL as a reference to the F-16XL

prototypes: an extended fuselage/wing for an extended

range fighter-bomber model (it lost the competition to the F-15E

Strike Eagle so it was cancelled) and the prototypes were given to

NASA- check them out:

SARAI

This is the final project for my comic class Ink Plots / understanding graphic novels class (taught by Bob Dohrmann at OU).

I plan on taking this story to the next level…

Please note that like math I have avoided the human form my entire life so cut me some slack. I have finally begun working on developing my people skills (drawing). There is also some things I think I will change, but this work was turned in a day late so…Let me know what you think. The image is a sample page from the comic.

A-RAV (Autonomous Robotic Armored Vehicle)

This is a piece of concept art I made (in photoshop) for the BAD ELEMENT saga.  I am hoping to self publish a graphic novel or a series of short stories beginning this year (if I can find the time between work school and family!!).

13 tons of alloy, weaponry and animal agility. The A-RAV carries a four man tiger team in its payload. It is remotely or autonomously operated throughout the hot-zone. Standard armament is an anti personnel machine gun, anti armor rockets and surface to air missiles. All of the weapon pylons extend from internal weapons bays and retract  when not in use or rearming. integrated sensors give the A-RAV a 360 view in its environment providing a constant awareness level. The vehicle also extends the secure network like a hub and can engage in e warfare with its powerful electronic comm system. The A-RAV protects its team from medium fire power and excessive radiation levels.

20120701-022749.jpg work begun

This is a project I started this summer. I bought a 125 pound block of Alabaster from Myles of 2sculpt. Thanks, Bill & Myles.

I am making a chambered nautilus and this is the in-work progress. The stone itself is South western raspberry alabaster from the US. It looks whitish but when polished the bands of raspberry red, white and soft green shine bright and is very beautiful in appearance.

I made a miniature model out of sulfur based clay to study the form and get an idea how to sculpt the nautilus.

Here is a link to a YouTube video me sculpting, it was really just to show an example of the chiseling on the beginning and yes it was uncomfortable before I lifted it up onto the bench.

I love the nautilus it’s a living fossil, and I would live to swim with one in the sea some day.

Crowd funding

I am working on a story that has multiplied into a trilogy which has now developed into a tetralogy. I have named this arching story Bad Element.

The definition of crowd funding is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowd_funding

I want to take my concept art and create a graphic novel and eventually a create a film and possibly a video game. In the end this would be great to turn into a web comic too. Tell your friends!

Tease

Here is a teaser for my project (assignment) for my graphic novel class.

I hope to make this story into a full graphic novel.

Pen on paper, Photoshop.

Simia Sapiens

ImageImageImage

I am sculpting this piece out of sulfur based clay at school. It is ongoing and it is “evolving” along in a bumpy but satisfying journey.

I would have to cast this clay to make a replica, instead of fire this because of its material qualities.

You may have noticed a man-ape like likeness. What is the future of man, what about primates? What about the past?

I want to explore the portrait  of something that can be both man and animal. Because we are one and the same.

Torana

ImageImageImage

This is orange translucent alabaster, purchased raw on ebay from Utah.

I bought it in England, online, then brought it back to America, it was sculpted in Oklahoma.

This is an utterly abstract piece of eye candy (thank you Bruce  Dwyer (Dad) for buying this up).

Torana is a Budhist concept that has grown and changes as it traveled through China and Japan.

A Torana is a gateway, said to be a symbol, where it is brings good luck as you pass through it, like a dream catcher.

History

How have your actions shaped your future? Are you bound by the past or are you free?

With my art I like to let you draw your own conclusions, then I’ll give my two cents.

My favorite band Tool does this with lyrics and their artistic music experiences (videos).

This was a contemporary sculpture assignment that combined a found object with your

hand cast in plaster that focused on memory, dreams and/or history.

Vertebrae

Vertabrae was the outcome of a school assignment to develop a sculpture from a concept that you devised after visiting the OKC bone museum (yes collage field trips are cool).

I love a graceful, mecahnical and mathmatically beautifl skeleton of a very small monkey. The vertabrae from the head to the tail had a cool hinge like action, and I came up with my concept sketches and deviations of the skeleton.

This is wood, stained with Lemon Zinger Tea, finished in a mink oil polish. The wire is copper and it can be fastened at both ends with copper wire of clear fishing line and displayed on a pedestal or hung from the center of the thread, making a U shape. I really like this piece. But I will part with it soon.

Big thanks to my client and new friend Christoph Petry for the commission of this work and for approaching me for this project. It was really cool taking your ideas, adding mine and creating these planes. Sie rocken Mann!

-Hypersonic aircraft from the future- designed with scram jet technology these bombers are self-powered and can dash at Mach 10. Based on real technology in development.

US bomber is a multi mission designed to perform hypersonic strikes and conventional bomber missions. The Russian Aircraft is more of a space plane, designed for delivery of nuclear weapons and suborbital flight.
